A two-week revolt by Dungeons & Dragons fans has sent the company behind the venerable tabletop role-playing game scrambling to make amends.

Driving the news: Facing infuriated fans, Hasbro-owned Wizards of the Coast says it will refrain from implementing some of the recently leaked, upcoming changes to a license that allows fans and game makers to use elements of D&D in their own spinoff games.

The dispute has shaken up the world of tabletop gaming. Some fans are questioning their loyalties to the nearly 49-year-old D&D franchise, while rivals gather strength.

Catch-up quick: The D&D community erupted five days into 2023 after news outlet Gizmodo published leaked details about Open Game License (OGL) 1.1, a significant revision to the license that Wizards of the Coast has overseen since 2000 to govern the usage of some parts of D&D.

Under the original license, content creators — from fans to small businesses that make their own popular tabletop games — have been able to freely use some of the dice-rolling, stat-counting mechanics and legacy character elements of Dungeons & Dragons.

The leaked 1.1 would have constricted the deal with registration requirements, a royalty structure for top earners and language about possible revocation or changes to rights in the future. Its more limited scope appeared to only cover physical games to the exclusion of popular virtual tabletop experiences.

Furious reaction: A fandom used to D&D’s more open system flipped out, filling social media with calls for players to cancel their paid subscriptions to Wizards’ online portal D&D Beyond. (The company says Beyond has over 12 million registered users.).

“It's genuinely heartbreaking,” Troy Knowlton, a longtime D&D player from Boston who has amassed thousands of hours of playtime, tells Axios. He says he has canceled his Beyond subscription.

He viewed the moves as an affront to third-party tabletop role-playing game creators, who he said “shepherd new players into the game and invigorate the veterans by establishing new content.”

“While unsurprising in this late-stage capitalist realm we reside in, it shows a complete negligence of the creatives who have helped D&D become the monolith of [tabletop role-playing games] it now is."

Limited communication: Wizards of the Coast has responded slowly to the uproar, initially taking eight days to say the leak was only a proposal meant to generate feedback and that the final copy wouldn’t include a royalty system.

Several days later, with fans still upset, D&D executive producer Kyle Brink posted a follow-up, promising that no old content would lose its license.

In a follow-up a day later, he announced that D&D’s core mechanics would soon be entered into a Creative Commons license, and some early game content would now be controlled by its fan content policy. He added that a new 1.2 OGL would be workshopped publicly with feedback from the community.

In his notes, Brink said a major goal of the license revision was to bar the creation of offensive content using elements of D&D.

What they’re saying: “We are sorry,” Brink wrote in an online notice to fans late last week. “We got it wrong.”

The intrigue: Some influential creators are ready to move on. Paizo, a company that released popular content like Pathfinder under the older OGL, recently said it would not create work through the new license and instead announced the formation of an Open RPG Creative License.

Late last week, it announced it had 1,500 companies and creators on board.

What’s next: The feedback process for Wizards’ 1.2 OGL runs into February and possibly beyond, “until we get it right,” Brink said.

Some fans like Knowlton see improvements in the Wizards’ latest comments but are wary, saying the company lost their trust.

for crypto currency novice like me this coindesh newsletter summary very useful----

I found this crypto summary useful for me but I expect its basic for jeanne... John are you halfway in between my novice status and jeanne's wizard.? .“The most important thing about crypto is permissionless innovation,” he said. “That’s the idea that you do not need to get a license or a business plan approved.
I found this crypto summary useful for me but I expect its basic for jeanne... John are you halfway in between my novice status and jeanne's wizard.? .“The most important thing about crypto is permissionless innovation,” he said. “That’s the idea that you do not need to get a license or a business plan approved. You can just deploy a contract on-chain and it starts getting users.”

See also: Dragonfly's Haseeb Qureshi Is Still Optimistic in the Crypto Bear Market

And so, Qureshi says, even if crypto has problems it might prove its utility by allowing anyone to innovate.

At Consensus 2022 in Austin, Texas, CoinDesk asked Qureshi to explain crypto’s growing pains, and how he thinks about its longstanding issues. Here’s what he said:

Privacy

When you think about privacy, everything you do in [decentralized finance] is viewable. We've gotten used to that in crypto, but that's not the way of the future. There will be some trade-off that we can make that is going to be similar to the kind of privacy we expect in the real world that would still give us the auditability that we care about and that makes DeFi, DeFi.

Interoperability

Right now, you're extremely aware of what chain you're on. You know if you’re on Solana, or Avalanche or Ethereum. At some point in the future, almost without a doubt, you will have digital assets and you will interact with applications – and that will be your relationship with [the blockchain].

On the internet you don't interact with this service or that service. You don't interact with Cloudflare, and you certainly don't give a s**t about TCP/IP. Your allegiance is to your application. So in the future, if you want to do yield aggregation, instead of just looking at Yearn you’ll look at what's the best yield anywhere in crypto. It will just be like calling out to another server on the internet.

Scalability
The fastest blockchains do less than, like, 1,000 TPS [transactions per second] each. You can argue about the margin there, but the bottom line is that none of them do that much throughput today. And for us to really get to world scale, all blockchains need to be much faster, much more scalable and have a much higher throughput. That applies to roll-ups and the like, too.

You want to get to not just tens of millions of users but hundreds of millions of users. Further, we talk a lot about users but we don't talk much about access patterns. You want access patterns that look anything like what people do in Web 2, you need much, much, much more scalability.

You could argue that bitcoin is the most used cryptocurrency because it has the most holders. I don't know the exact numbers, but something like 50% of Americans own crypto. I’d guess more than half [of those] only own bitcoin. And maybe there's one transaction those people, who likely bought BTC on an exchange, actually settle on chain, if that, per year. If that's the case, then the access pattern of someone using bitcoin is that one transaction.

But what's the access patterns of someone using the internet? I don’t know how many Google searches I make per day. So a Web 3 user is gonna result in many transactions per day.

Identity

The issue here is having an online identity that can be relied upon. Let's say I want to offer you credit – credit is about your identity, about who you are but also about my recourse. I can only offer you credit if I know that I have a path towards getting it back. If I don’t know who you are and you run away, I'm underwater immediately. There's no recourse.

Related here is bankruptcy. That’s a punishment that survives you and our relationship if you default on the debt. Bankruptcy is one of the most important innovations that we have made in capital markets. It’s very underappreciated in crypto. It’s the way you protect your remaining assets if you cannot pay back all your creditors and how credits can punish you into the future. You cannot do credit without the concept of bankruptcy. But in order to have that you need Identity. Identity that persists.

Identity is also important for things like marketing. People don't think about this very often, but when you sign up for Coinbase, they can tell whether your institution or retail. If you’re retail, they throw a bunch of incentives and charge you an arm and a leg for every transaction. If you're an institution – they don’t have to pay anything to get on board, but they charge you bips because you're price sensitive. Brokerages make all their money from retail.

In DeFi I can't tell whether you are retail or whether you are Jump [Crypto, the digital asset wing of the eponymous hedge fund]. The protocol treats everyone the same. A centralized exchange’s margin would f**king collapse. Imagine how much money could be made if DeFi businesses could know who their customers are. Nobody can do it today because there's no notion of identity.

We're investing in a company called Quadrantid that allows you to selectively disclose parts of your [know-your-customer] background. So you can selectively disclose your country or other parameters about yourself that you might want to prove to an application or business. This means you could KYC to receive an incentive, but may not have to.

UX

MetaMask, for instance, is not the most user-friendly way to transact. We've already seen some wallets start to do it much better, like Solana’s Phantom – great wallet experience. Keplr – great wallets. We've been able to learn from mistakes, and I think we're gonna see more and more innovation.
beingai.com hiring - skills s…tag:normanmacrae.ning.com,2022-06-10:6339278:Comment:1387582022-06-10T20:07:13.556Zchris macraehttp://normanmacrae.ning.com/profile/s0neqm9lsoui

Over the next 18 months guterres who is in years 7 and 8 of 10 of leading Un completes UN2.0 - I am issuing foirst deck of slides on that later this week - say if relevant

My intuition is that this objective is fatally flawed, because there are people who are not altruistic and there are people who try to make money by inappropriate methods. You quote correctly the example of cryptocurrency. I have no idea whether cryptocurrency will turn out to be valuable in the long term. But my perspective on cryptocurrency is that the fact that there is no institution guaranteeing that it will work implies that it will not work, and the fact that the price has investor support does not reflect any reality, because it is a feature of human psychology that people like to trust and especially they like to trust if there is a possibility of one's investment going up in value.

Back in 1972 my father pointed out why paper currencies printed ny government are falwed - eg they requirle next gen to bail ou old gens - and they assume zero sum - whereas life saving knowhow multiplies in colaborative use- the origina blockchain papers satoshi 2008 sounded like digital resolution to subprime crisis; instead the big cryptos today often used to money launder- one question is why did UN not issue coin round financing sdgs- is it too late to do so. I am not even confident rabkin is in top 100 people who understand crypto and human sustainability- my view is he keeps issung brainstorming challenges -thats both the worldwide scope and the limitaion of him

I am reminded of the Madoff matter, which ended up being a Ponzi scheme, about which I read a book, because in that case it was difficult for investors to know that their investment was going to lose money but the basis of his success was that some investors are prepared to trust others when money is involved. I see nothing to prevent a cryptocurrency losing all its value.

One of the problems is every system designed by the EU has become a ponzi scheme -wherever todays under 30s are at risk of being the extinction generation it is western Dc-EU ponzi schemes that are the deep data problem - in my opinion

The data mining aspect and the limitation on the number of units of a cryptocurrency are I think irrelevant in a more complete analysis.

various cryptos have just collapsed because people did not understand that mining costs could become more expensive than the thinh being bought if everyone needed the miners to exchange at same time

The doubts that I mention above are also applicable to decentralized autonomous organizations. I do not see a problem if institutions are run by altruistic persons. I do not see a problem if they are run in a transparent fashion by persons or companies who would like to make money.

to adam smithians (my home network) transparency is always the chalelnge - but eg none of financial professions has been transparent since 1990- we are missing goodwill audit of exponentials; if the only audit of big orgs is how much money did you take out each quarter that is the least sustainable maths in the world

I am now a user of Thunderbird e-mail, which I think is in this category. I used to use Microsoft Outlook as my e-mail manager, but I changed to Thunderbird once I saw that Gmail intends to stop collaborating with older versions of Outlook.

I dont know thu8nderbord. I have kept same yahoo address for over 20 years for continuity of communication. I have but don regularly remember to look at gmail. I may need to re-edit everything I have written in italics; i have 2 sorts of problem - I am not at the forefront of tech wizardry; even when I* think I have just about understood the latest policy vocab relevant to sdgs i find 20 different academics or wizards have created subterminologi8es and I dont have the capacity to translate one to another; oddly artificial intel is very good at key vocabulary translations!!

I work with mainly older people (eg von neumanns daughter) whose networks are putting a lot of time and in some cases money into uniting a version of the metaverse (or the main channel beyond 1990s www) curating solutions the younger half of world needs to spread across communities to be sustainable. Often they have different vocabularies eg DAO takes quite a lot of explaining, and as for the current cryptocoin nightmare I am not confident anyone fully knows who to trust to what over longer periods of time than the money men judge us all by, and where politicians sometimes change the whole rules of the game vicariously. WE need stable cooperation maps not politicians sponsored by the gods of vested interests. I hope thats what DA gravitates around
